ALEC Report Exposes Efforts for Corporate-Sponsored Legislation Out of Public Eye

MADISON – Today, State Representative Mark Pocan released the following statement about the release of a Bill Moyers television report about the American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC), entitled “United States of ALEC.” Pocan commends Moyers, Democracy Now, and the many groups who are helping to expose corporate efforts to lobby and pass legislation outside of the law.

“ALEC is a corporate dating service for lonely legislators and corporate special interests that eventually culminates with some model special-interest legislation. Unfortunately, what’s excluded from that equation is the public.

“We must continue to expose how corporations are influencing legislation nation-wide outside of the public eye.  In Congress, I will continue to shine a light on corporate efforts to deny individual liberty and pass legislation that places profits above the lives and livelihoods of American citizens.”

The Bill Moyers report “United States of ALEC” will air on Sunday, September 30th at 6pm on Wisconsin Public Television. For more information visit the Bill Moyers website.

State Representative Mark Pocan (D-Madison) is the Democratic nominee for U.S. Congress in Wisconsin’s 2nd Congressional District.  Since 1999, he has served in the State Assembly, winning accolades as a proven fighter and effective legislator for working people.  He hopes to carry the torch of Wisconsin’s proud progressive tradition in the 2nd District, following U.S. Representative Tammy Baldwin’s decision to vacate the seat and campaign to become Wisconsin’s first female U.S. Senator.
